Documentary Explores Music's Effect On Alzheimer's

This film captures the transformation that takes place when nursing home residents are handed iPods loaded with music from their youth. It demonstrates how beneficial it is to fully understand the backgrounds of residents with a dementia. Here's a short clip, it's an amazing video.

Dan Cohen’s Music & Memory organization is soliciting donations of used and new iPods to put music in the hands of nursing home residents across the country. His documentary “Alive Inside” will premiere on April 18 at the Rubin Museum in New York.

Wind Powered Mine Sweeper

(download)

Went to the Design Museum last week to see the Designs of the Year exhibition, lots of great work nominated. This was by far my favourite. It currently costs £100 to clear 1 landmine, this solution works out at £2 per land mine. It's made of bamboo, is windpowered and contains a GPS chip to see which areas have been cleared. Designed by Massoud Hassani from Afghanistan.

The Glowing Man

Beautiful Video. "The Glowing Man suit, created by John Spatcher took 700 man hours of fabrication and testing. Then it had to be worn in temperatures reaching -13F. On top of that, much of the footage was captured at high speeds by a cameraman who was on a snowboard (at night) himself."

The Albatros Bookmark

Very nice and simple bookmark designed by Oscar Lhermitte, who was in the year above me at CSM. He's almost hit $40,000 in funds on Indiegogo after looking for just $3,000.

Nice video too

Simple genius: Silicone cased push pins

Toshi Fukaya's pushpins are designed to resemble smooth, pin-free capsules, so you can reach into a box full of them without pricking yourself. A silicone bubble encases the pin, and compresses under pressure when you stick the pin into the wall. Nice and simple solution to an annoying problem

100 year old keeps brain sharp with Nintendo ds

We're currently doing some work in the area of dementia and it's great to see someone using technology to keep your mind active at this age. Around 1 in 5 people suffer from dementia over the age of 80. Keen to see more technology companies exploring and designing products specifically for the elderly.

Nike develops a shoe for athletes with prosthetic limbs

Called the Nike Sole, this lightweight composite outsole slides onto the prosthetic limb and stays put, thanks to nine nylon tabs that grip on to the running blade. Before this innovation, amputees had to buy a pair of shoes and use one if they were a single amputee. The shoe’s sole would then be cut out and taped, glued or Velcroed on to the running blade, leaving little room for style or ease.

The Times: Cycling safety campaign

Having been almost knocked off my bike a few times, it's great to finally see a campaign for improving safety for cyclists, shocked that there is hardly anything in the current driving test on it.

Short video about the campaign here

http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/public/cyclesafety/contact/

The Times has launched a public campaign and 8-point manifesto calling for cities to be made fit for cyclists:

  1. Trucks entering a city centre should be required by law to fit censors, audible truck-turning alarms, extra mirrors and safety bars to stop cyclists being thrown under the wheels.
  2. The 500 most dangerous road junctions must be identified, redesigned or fitted with priority traffic lights for cyclists and Trixi mirrors that allow lorry drivers to see cyclists on their near-side.
  3. A national audit of cycling to find out how many people cycle in Britain and how cyclists are killed or injured should be held to underpin effective cycle safety.
  4. Two per cent of the Highways Agency budget should be earmarked for next generation cycle routes, providing £100 million a year towards world-class cycling infrastructure. Each year cities should be graded on the quality of cycling provision.
  5. The training of cyclists and drivers must improve and cycle safety should become a core part of the driving test.
  6. 20mph should become the default speed limit in residential areas where there are no cycle lanes.
  7. Businesses should be invited to sponsor cycleways and cycling super-highways, mirroring the Barclays-backed bicycle hire scheme in London.
  8. Every city, even those without an elected mayor, should appoint a cycling commissioner to push home reforms.

Cassette: A documentary

What happens when technology reaches an optimum, will we ever get bored of iPhones, mp3s and dslr's. I think with camera's this is definetly happening, as nostalgia kicks in more people arent looking for perfection, they are looking for unique.  Here's a kicktsarter project about the cassette, will it make a comeback, probably not, will it's use increase through curiosity and nostagia, maybe.

Toothbrush subscription service

Interesting business but not sure how they are going to make any money. You receive a new toothbrush made from recycled materials every 3 months and can send back your old toothbrush in an envelop.
